Keeping Energy Affordable in Greater Boston

Boston’s growing energy demand is putting pressure on the regional power system. Battery storage can help stabilize costs and strengthen reliability for families across the city.

Boston Sits at the Center of New England’s Power System

The Boston metropolitan area is one of the largest electricity demand centers in the region. Keeping power reliable here requires infrastructure that can handle rapid changes in demand during extreme weather, economic growth, and increased electrification.

Strategic investments in battery energy storage help strengthen the grid near major demand centers like Greater Boston.

Energy storage located near the heart of the system can reduce strain on transmission infrastructure while improving reliability across the entire New England grid.

Put simply, battery systems in the city would empower more reliable and accessible electricity across the region.

Smart Energy Infrastructure Can Deliver Major Savings

Private investment in battery storage projects in Greater Boston could save consumers up to billions of dollars and support a reliable electric grid.

A proposed battery energy project can bring about serious consumer benefits, including:

$2.2 billion
saved by consumers

by avoiding unnecessary transmission system upgrades.

Reduced costs by

$720 million

through reductions in avoidable electric system reliability costs.

1,200

high-wage job years

in remediation, site prep, and construction projects.

Over

$1 billion

in private investment in the Everett community.

Taking Greater Boston Communities

From Industrial Site to Modern Energy Infrastructure

Energy storage projects can help transform legacy industrial sites into modern infrastructure that supports the region’s energy needs.

Redevelopment efforts can include:

  • Environmental remediation of previously contaminated land
  • Revitalization of large industrial sites
  • Long-term economic investment in surrounding communities

These projects demonstrate how energy infrastructure can support both grid reliability and community redevelopment.

Long-Term Benefits

What Could Energy Investment Mean for Your Community?

Local Tax Revenue
Directly Boosting Public Resources

Energy infrastructure projects can provide a major new source of municipal tax revenue for host communities.

In some proposed projects, redevelopment of underused industrial sites for energy storage could increase local tax revenue more than tenfold compared to the previous use of the property, creating long-term funding streams for schools, further infrastructure improvements, and public services.

Working for Massachusetts Families
How does this take back control?

Energy infrastructure projects can create long-term economic opportunity by connecting local residents to skilled trades and workforce training programs.

Partnerships with building trades and apprenticeship programs help prepare local students and workers for high-wage careers in construction, electrical work, and energy infrastructure.

Dear Legislator,

I am writing to express my support for battery energy storage systems in our communities across Massachusetts. These projects are essential infrastructure that will strengthen our electric grid, reduce costs for ratepayers and help the state achieve its clean energy and climate goals.

Battery storage is a proven and safe technology. More than 100 storage facilities already operate successfully throughout Massachusetts, providing reliable, low-cost energy to homes and businesses. By storing clean electricity when it is abundant and releasing it during times of high demand, these systems reduce our reliance on expensive and polluting gas sources – cutting emissions, improving air quality and lowering electricity prices.

Energy storage projects in Massachusetts must meet rigorous state and national safety standards, including comprehensive fire-suppression measures, 24/7 monitoring, and detailed emergency response planning. Developers work closely with local fire departments and first responders to ensure proper training and transparency throughout the siting, construction, and operational phases. This level of oversight has made Massachusetts a national leader in safe, responsible storage deployment.

In addition to delivering statewide grid benefits, battery storage projects frequently provide important local advantages, such as:

  • Generating new municipal tax revenue without burdening residents
  • Revitalizing underutilized or previously contaminated land
  • Supporting local jobs during construction and ongoing operations
  • Improving community resilience by helping prevent outages and stabilizing the grid

As Massachusetts moves toward an energy system powered increasingly by renewable resources, storage is indispensable. It enables the state to capture the full value of clean energy investments, maintain system reliability and protect consumers from volatile energy prices.

For these reasons, I urge you to continue supporting policies and permitting processes that enable the responsible development of battery storage in Massachusetts. This technology is safe, forward-looking, and essential to building a cleaner, more resilient, and more affordable energy future for our state.

Sincerely,
